Question:

 

Is it allowed to work in the bank?

 

 

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

 

Answer:

 

Riba (interest) and any involvement in interest have been severely condemned in the Quran and Hadith. The ruling would depend on the actual job description and the source of remuneration.

 

Employment at a bank or financial institution that entails direct involvement with interest-based transactions such as the job of a manager, cashier, clerk, etc. will be unlawful (haram).

 

On the contrary, if the job does not entail involvement in the interest-based dealings of the bank such as security and cleaning staff or working in the IT department with duties linked to the programming, software, networking systems etc. then it will be permissible albeit discouraged.

 

However, if any other suitable job is available you should consider that option as opposed to working for the bank.

Surah Baqarah v275

عن جابر رضي الله عنه قال لعن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم آكل الربا وموكله وكاتبه وشاهديه وقال هم سواء (صحيح مسلم رقم 1598)

 

 

عن أبى هريرة رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال ليأتين على الناس زمان لا يبقى أحد إلا أكل الربا فإن لم يأكله أصابه من بخاره (سنن الترمذي رقم 3333)

 

 

عن عبد الله بن حنظلة غسيل الملائكة رضي الله عنه قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم درهم ربا يأكله الرجل وهو يعلم أشد من ستة وثلاثين زنية (مسند أحمد رقم 21957)
