Question:

Is it sunnah to dye the hair and beard ginger?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Jurists have stated it is sunnah (a prophetic practice) and or mustaḥab (praiseworthy) to use henna to dye grey hair. Depending on the type and origins of the henna, the colour can vary. Usually, there is some kind of redness in henna dye. There are narrations that substantiate the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) applied henna on his grey hairs. – (See: Rad Al-Muḥtār, Vol 6, Page 756, Dār Al-Fikr¹)

Abū Rimthah said, “My father and I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he had dyed his beard with henna.” – (Nasaī’ 5083)²

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Indeed the best of what the grey [hairs] may be changed with is henna and katam.” – (Tirmidhī 1753)³

1 قَوْلُهُ جَازَ فِي الْأَصَحِّ وَهُوَ مَرْوِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِي يُوسُفَ فَقَدْ قَالَ يُعْجِبُنِي أَنْ تَتَزَيَّنَ لِي امْرَأَتِي كَمَا يُعْجِبُهَا أَنْ أَتَزَيَّنَ لَهَا وَالْأَصَحُّ أَنَّهُ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ فِي الْحَرْبِ وَغَيْرِهِ وَاخْتَلَفَتْ الرِّوَايَةُ فِي أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَهُ فِي عُمْرِهِ وَالْأَصَحُّ لَا وَفَصَّلَ فِي الْمُحِيطِ بَيْنَ الْخِضَابِ بِالسَّوَادِ قَالَ عَامَّةُ الْمَشَايِخِ إنَّهُ مَكْرُوهٌ وَبَعْضُهُمْ جَوَّزَهُ مَرْوِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِي يُوسُفَ أَمَّا بِالْحُمْرَةِ فَهُوَ سُنَّةُ الرِّجَالِ وَسِيَّمَا الْمُسْلِمِينَ اهـ مِنَحٌ مُلَخَّصًا وَفِي شَرْحِ الْمَشَارِقِ لِلْأَكْمَلِ وَالْمُخْتَارُ أَنَّهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَضَّبَ فِي وَقْتٍ وَتَرَكَهُ فِي مُعْظَمِ الْأَوْقَاتِ وَمَذْهَبُنَا أَنَّ الصَّبْغَ بِالْحِنَّاءِ وَالْوَسْمَةِ حَسَنٌ كَمَا فِي الْخَانِيَّةِ قَالَ النَّوَوِيُّ وَمَذْهَبُنَا اسْتِحْبَابُ خِضَابِ الشَّيْبِ لِلرَّجُلِ وَالْمَرْأَةِ بِصُفْرَةٍ أَوْ حُمْرَةٍ – كتاب الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين رد المحتار ج٦/ ص٧٥٦ دار الفكر

2 عَنْ إِيَادِ بْنِ لَقِيطٍ عَنْ أَبِي رِمْثَةَ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ أَنَا وَأَبِي النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَكَانَ قَدْ لَطَخَ لِحْيَتَهُ بِالْحِنَّاءِ – رواه النسائي ٥٠٨٣‏

3 عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ إِنَّ أَحْسَنَ مَا غُيِّرَ بِهِ الشَّيْبُ الْحِنَّاءُ وَالْكَتَمُ – رواه الترمذي ١٧٥٣
