Question

Assalamu Alaikum

I, unfortunately, have a wicked father. For the past twenty years, he's made my mum and our lives miserable – as miserable as it can get. He has beaten us, tortured us, denied us our rights, harassed us, insulted us, and even lied against us. He would cook up stories and tell people just to make us look bad.

He's also a believer in witch doctors whom he visits almost every day and they tell him to do's and don'ts. We're in so much pain that we hate him. A lot. The situation is so bad that I hate the idea of marriage and run away from men thinking they're all like him. My question is, is it wrong to ask Allah to punish him for his misdeeds? To be honest I want him to taste his own medicine. Thank you

Answer:

Wa alaykum salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

We must not forget that this life is a test. We read in the Quran: {Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tested?}. [29/2] Sometimes we are tested by our children, our brothers and as in your case, by your father. Know that every moment of patience will be rewarded by Allah.

It is not right to curse or make dua against your father.[1]

Know that you get rewarded in abstaining from such things, and remember this hadith: "The person who perfectly maintains the ties of kinship is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives, but is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who had severed the bond of kinship with him." (Bukhari) May Allah reward you for your patience.
