Question

A sister asks:

“I kept fasting for the whole day and I’m sure that my menses didn’t start at least up to ‘asr time, but then after iftar, I discovered they started, but I realized it only after iftar time entered, and I don’t know if it started before or after iftar time, will that day’s fast be valid or shall she have to make qada’ of it?”.

Answer

‘Feeling’ or ‘knowing’ or even assuming that blood has flowed is not regarded as the start of menses. However, when she does a check afterward and discovers that indeed blood has flowed out onto the underwear, or has soiled the pad if any, then it will be said that her Haidh had commenced from the time she felt the initial flow.

Regarding your question, if she felt the flow of blood before Iftar then she will have to do Qadha. If she did not feel the flow before Iftar but sees the blood after Iftar, then there is no Qadha for her. If she is in doubt, it will be best to do Qadha to be on the safe side.

If the menses start before Iftaar, Qadha of that fast will be compulsory. (Sharhul Wiqaayah p.115)
