Question

In today’s era, there is a business going on imitation jewelry, is it halal to do this business? And also business going on bridal wear (Sharara etc) which only use on the occasion of the wedding, I do not use every day, is it also halal to this business?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

It is totally permissible for women to wear gold and silver rings. Allamah Zufur Ahmad (RA) narrates that it is permissible for women to wear all types of jewelry made out of gold and silver like rings, bangles, anklets, necklaces, etc (Illaus Sunan p.289 v.17)

It is permissible for women to wear plastic necklaces or bangles etc… (Khawateen Ke Li Jadeed Masaail p.112)

However, it is Makruh Tanzihi and not Tahrimi for women to wear rings other than gold and silver. (Fatawa Rashidiyah p.491)

If the rings are made out of iron but are plated with gold or silver, then there is nothing wrong in women wearing them. (Fatawa Hindiyyah p.335 v.5)

From the aforementioned discussion, we can derive that imitation jewelry besides rings is permissible. Selling those types of jewelry will be permissible, however, selling imitation rings would not be allowed.

Similarly, selling bridal clothes or wedding dresses would be permissible. The Islamic principle is that something, which may be used for lawful purposes, is permissible to sell.  As these wedding dresses have a permissible aspect such as the woman may wear it for her husband in private then they are deemed permissible to sell.  (Taqrir Tirmizi p.221 v.1 & Takmilah Fathul Mulhim p.551 v.1)
