Question

If everyone has a soul mate. And if you get divorced. And don’t find anyone else. Does it mean you never had a soul mate? Or the person you divorced was actually your soul mate?

Answer:

Every provision for each creature has been destined by Allah, even the marriages that take place amongst us are part of our destined provisions. Allah mentions in Quran “And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts. Verily in that are signs for those who reflect.” [Quran 30:21]

There are some persons who will exist in this life and will leave this world but would not experience marriage because it was not part of the provisions destined for them. Does this mean that such persons did not have “soul mates”?

The concept of soul mates may be a reality in a sense but it is not something that Islam strongly propagates and denial of it is not a great issue.

Concerning the Islamic meaning of “soul mates”; we find the hadeeth of the prophet (s.a.w.),” Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) Saying: souls are troops collected together and those who familiarized with each other (in the heaven from where these come) would have an affinity, with one another (in the world) and those amongst them who opposed each other (in the Heaven) would also be divergent (in the world).[1]

Thus if a Muslim finds himself/herself very attached to another person, whether that person is a sibling, a spouse, or a friend, then it is safe to assume that they were well acquainted in the world of the souls. The concept of having a soulmate for life, or searching this world for one’s soulmate is something un-Islamic as the heart was created to be devoted to Allah alone and not to any creation of Allah. The very objective of Islam and the teachings of all the prophets is to direct the hearts of mankind towards devotion to Allah almighty.

If a person is in pain due to the longing for a loved one or due to the urge to find a “soul mate”, then such a person is advised to keep making salaat ul Haajaat and Istigfaar, make peace with Allah, and turn all our attention to him. He will in return answer our duas and fulfill our needs.
