Question

I have heard many people saying that shifting house in Islamic months such as Safar or Jumadaul Awwal or Jumadaul Akhar is not good and it will have some future bad effects, is it true.

Is Istikhara necessary before shifting house?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

There is particularly no basis for such a practice in Islam at all.

There is no sunnah method of moving into a new home. However, you may perform 2 Rakat of Salat Hajat and make dua for blessings, and then move into the new house.

Also, you can pray salah of Istikhara if you want, prior to moving into a house.

If the person slaughters or gives some money to poor people as an act of gratitude to Allah (عز و جل)for providing him with a new house, then this is good. It is likable for the person entering a new house to say the following dua after the sun sets

أعُوذُ بِكَلِماتِ اللَّهِ التّامّاتِ مِن شَرِّ ما خَلَقَ

“I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He has created [1]“. Then during that night, nothing can harm him.

Once moved into the house, the recommended things to do on daily basis:

  • Read the Quran
  • Read Ayatul Kursi
  • Read Suratul Falaq and Suratun Nas
  • Pray Nafl at home
  • Do zikr

One may read the following dua prior to entering the house each time.

O Allah, I ask you the best way in, and the best way out, in the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah, we go out, and on Allah, our Lord, we trust. [2] And then give salam to himself.
