Question:
Is wearing loose trousers permissible in Islam with a long loose top?
Or are there any situations where it is permissible such as doing sports or working in healthcare
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
A woman can wear clothing of her choice if it fulfils the following requirements of hijab:
- It is covering the entire body except for the face, hands, and feet.
- it is loose enough not to outline the shape of the body.
- it is not being transparent.
- it avoids excessive adornment or clothing that attracts unnecessary attention.
The Qur’an provides us the principles on how a women should dress that does not draw unnecessary attention. Allah says in Quran
“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts, and not to display their beauty except what is apparent…
Surah An-Nur 24 verse 31
This verse tells us that women should dress modestly and not display their beauty except what naturally appears. The expression “what is apparent” refers to the parts of the body that are generally visible, such as the face and hands.
Furthermore, Allah says: –
“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments…”
Surah Al-Ahzab: 33verse 59
Prophet Mohammed ( Pbuh) said: –
“There are two types of people of Hell whom I have not seen yet… women who are clothed yet naked, swaying and causing others to sway.”
To conclude, if you wear your trousers in a way that it does not outline the shape of the body and the top that extends past the hips, then this can be considered modest and acceptable. The key is that the top should not be tight or transparent, and it should provide adequate coverage.
Hope this answers the question.
Only Allah knows best.
