Question:
Hazrat,
I am strongly considering taking up a second job on weekends. The role, I have looked at is working for an airliner (Jet2). The role involves booking flights, but then upselling certain products i.e. car hire, private transfers, excursions, pre booked seats, inflight meals, and
TRAVEL INSURANCE. For each product you sell, you're given commission.
I'm well aware selling, and taking any form of insurance is haram. I am also aware of the Hadith of Rasulullah , where he said anyone who assists in a haram transaction takes a share of the blame.
My questions:
1) Considering, the bulk of the duties are halal would it be permissible
for me to take up this role?
2) If, my understanding is correct, I will have to give up the
commission earned for upselling travel insurance?
I will try, and avoid of it course, but if a customer is asking for it,
I will have to finalise the deal/transaction.
Jazak'Allah.
Answer:
Bismillah
Being directly involved in a transaction of interest is prohibited. (Contemporary fatawa, by mufti taqiUsmani, pg. 163, Idarat e Islamiyat.)
Unless the major part (at least 51%) of the company is haram, it is not prohibited to draw salary for permissible services rendered to that company. (Contemporary fatawa, by mufti taqiUsmani, pg. 162, Idarat e Islamiyat.)
Any assistance provided to the costumer for obtaining an interest bearing loan, including the filling of the application form for the loan, is not permissible. (Same reference as above.)
Based on the above statements, taking up that job will not be permissible because you will be directly involved in interest bearing transaction. To work for a company which has some interest bearing transactions but you are not directly involved in it, will be permissible as long as the major part of the company is not based on haram transactions.
Only Allah knows best.
