Question:

I started taking religion seriously two months ago. Before that, I was not a good person. I had an addiction to porn. I used to get many blasphemous thoughts. Then I started to enjoy people insulting and making fun of my religion. I too said some blasphemous stuff. I can’t share with you it was that bad. I did the same 2 weeks ago. I was even told that I am not Muslim. Did I commit kufr? I’m feeling very scared and anxious. Please help me out. I am changed I am trying to do all religious activities.

Answer:

A person becomes a disbeliever if he/she disbelieves in the fundamentals of Islam which are believing in Allah and that Prophet Muhammad is the last Prophet, Salah, fasting in the month of Ramadan, zakat (obligatory charity), and hajj.

Jokes about Allah, the Quran, and Islam also nullify a person’s Islam. Allah says in Quran: –

“If you ask them (about this), they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and joking.’ Say: ‘Was it at Allah, and His Ayat, and His Messenger that you were mocking?’

Make no excuses. You became disbelievers (by mocking Allah and His Messenger) after you had professed Faith. If We forgive some of you (who repent and believe), We shall punish others (who carry on their hypocrisy), because they were guilty.

Sura Tauba 9, verses 65-66

So, you better ask forgiveness, do sincere repentance, and read your Shahada. Try to pray in your local masjid and sit in the good company of Muslims, listen to Islamic scholars, and do zikr of Isitghifaar as it will remove anxiety and distress.

The Messenger of Allah said, “If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.” i
