Allah stresses the importance of kind and good treatment towards the wife in the Quran. Allah states: “… And live with them honorably…” (Surah Nisa: V19)

The Prophet (sallal Lahu alayhi wa sallam) equally stressed the good treatment towards the wife. It is narrated by Aishah (radi allahu anha) that she heard the Messenger of Allah (sallal Lahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: “The best amongst you is the one who is good to his wife (and he further said) I am good to my wives.: (Tirmidhi)

It is a duty of an individual to fulfill the rights others hold over them. Abdullah ibn Umar narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sallal lahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “…All of you are guardians and responsible for your wards and the things under your care. The Imam (i.e. ruler) is the guardian of his subjects and is responsible for them and a man is the guardian of his family and is responsible for them. A woman is the guardian of her husband’s house and is responsible for it…” (Sahih Al Bukhari: 2.18)

The relationship between a husband and wife is that of love and kindness and the best way to resolve the above issue would be firstly to discuss the matter openly with each other and for the wife to tell her husband of the hardship and hurt she faces. This would help him to understand, as after all he should have her best interest in his heart. It should also be explained to him that he should look at the life of the prophet and look how he treated him wives. A tried and tested method of reciting the name of Allah, “Ya Wadood” 1000 times is said to create love and affection between a husband and wife.

And Allah knows best.
