Question:

If one suffers from hair loss and wears a wig to cover the hair loss and they make mass’a over the wig for wudu will this be valid?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

First, we have to understand that it is permissible for a woman to use wigs that are made from animal hair or synthetic hair. Using wigs made from human hair is completely impermissible and haram.

Finally, it will not be permissible to make masah (wipe) over the wig. The wig must be removed and then masah must be made over the head. Allah (swt) states in the Quran,” And make masah (wipe) over your heads.” (5:6)

Therefore if one were to make masah over the wig, the water will not reach the roots of the head which is the purpose of masah. This is compared to a person making masah over a covering which one is wearing over his head like a cap or turban. One must remove the head covering and then perform masah over the head.

وفي الفقه الحنفي في ثوبه الجديد:

لو مسحت على شعر مستعار لا يصح لأن المسح عليه كالمسح فوق غطاء الرأس وهذا لا يجوز في الوضوء. (ج۱،ص۱۱)
