Question:

I have had problems with my sleep for many years now. I pray fajr in time mostly, but it is having a negative impact on my life. Of course it is not the prayer itself, but I'm facing hard time to sleep during evenings/nights and to go to bed again after fajr, which leads to me not sleeping at all or sleeping away the whole day. Are there any rukhsas (leeways) in this matter in my case? Can I intentionally skip fajr-salah and make it up when I wake up?

Answer:

Bismillah

Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) mentions in the Holy Quran: “Surely, salah is an obligation on the believers which is tied up with time” (Surah An Nisaa v103)

One of the pre requisites of Salah is that it be offered in its time and before the time of salah, one cannot offer the prayer.

It has been understood from the Ahadeeth that one of the most beloved acts to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) is to offer prayer at its earliest and original time.

Abdulah Ibn Umar raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) has said: “ There lies in the earliest time of Salah Allah’s pleasure while the concluding time is his grant” (Sunan Tirmidhi  hadith 172)

Abu Amr Shaybani reported that a man asked Abdullah Ibn Masood raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) which deed is the best? He replied:” I had put the same question forward to Rasulullah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) and he said:” to offer salah during the desirable time for it” (Sunan Tirmidhi hadith 173)

Sayyidnah Ali Ibn Abi Talib raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported that the hole Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said to him: “O Ali! Do not postpone three things: prayer when it is time for it, funeral when it is ready and the marriage of an unmarried woman when a match is found for her.” (Sunan Tirmidhi hadith 171)

From the above ahadeeth we learn the importance of offering salah at its appointed time.

With regards to your question, it is not permissible for one to miss ones salah deliberately and make up for it later. Care should be taken in ones Salah. I advise you sort out your sleeping routine; maybe you could go straight to sleep after Isha. You could also try some non-drowsy, non-health effecting sleeping tablets to try to induce you to go to sleep early.

Saaiduna Abu Barza raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him)  reports that the Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) used to dislike sleep before 'Isha' and talk after it." (Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
