Miswaak whilst fasting
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.
Answer
Saaiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam has said… “By that being in whose hand is my (Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam) life. The odour of the mouth of a fasting person is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk.” (Sahih Bukhari p.254 v.1)
It is permissible to use the miswaak to clean one’s teeth. Some have held it to be makruh to use miswaak as it changes the smell of a person’s breath. However, what is correct is that it just cleanses the mouth and does not change the odour or the smell of the mouth, which is blessed to Allah (SWA). (Maraqi Falah p.210)
