Question:
My parents want to send me to a nearby city to complete my studies. I have a house there and all my comforts are there and we have arranged everything such that nothing goes contradictory with the Sharia boundaries. Now, before sending, we prayed istikhara and what we saw as dreams were out of our comprehension and the way we interpreted shows that the dream was not a good one. I prayed on this matter and asked Allah to guide me on the Right path and have been praying since then. However, due to our own interpretation of the dream, my mother and I backed out from the decision and temporarily my father backed out too. But Mufti Saheb, my father really wants to send me there since he has this strong desire to make me among the ones who have the best deeni and duniyawi education (I’m currently in my second year for alimah). Therefore mufti sahab this has happened numerous times and my father convinced me again to go. I’ve done istikhara several times and each time this happened I and my mother convinced him to backout from this and temporarily he did but in a few days he again made up his mind and convinced me and my mother. I too desire to complete my studies there but I don’t know now what to do. I don’t understand if this is due to the istikhara that I’m being pushed by my father to do this again and again even if I make up my mind not to go there. This has been going on for a few months and now it’s the deadline to make the payment in my institute and my father is again convincing me to go there and I too want to but I’m confused. P.S. to mention my mother is not very happy due to this thought that istikhara wasn’t good as she firmly believes on dreams. Please guide me on what I should do, Jazakallahu Khair.

Answer:
Even though it is an immensely rewarding act to leave one’s home and travel for the sake of seeking knowledge, however in this day and age there are concerns for the safety of yourself and your Iman. If you are in another city, your family cannot protect you as easily. Hence, your mother presumably wishes to keep you close so that you are under her observation and she can save you from many of the fitnahs and dangers of today.
In saying that, perhaps you should ask a senior scholar about the interpretation of your Istikhara dream.
I also advise parents to keep their children close and educate them in a local madrasa due to the prevalence of evil in today’s society. Furthermore, staying with your parents means that you have more opportunities to serve them.
However, if your father is really eager to send you to the Madrasa which is out of town, and he believes this is the better option, then this is a discussion that he must have with your mother and they need to come to an agreement.
With Hikmah/wisdom and the best of character, please humbly ask your parents to make a unanimous decision in this regard so that you have a clear order to obey. Once they come to an agreement, act accordingly because there is great blessing/ barakah in following the mutual hukm/ decision of your parents.
