Multiple Tawafs Better Than Multiple Umrahs

Question:

 

Generally multiple Tawaafs are better than multiple Umrahs

 

Would this change in Ramadaan? Would multiple Umrahs be preferred, due to the virtue of Umrah in Ramadaan?

 

 

 

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

 

Answer:

 

It is permissible to perform multiple Umrahs in a single trip by returning to the Meeqaat each time. However, it is more virtuous to focus on performing additional Tawaafs rather than multiple Nafl Umrahs since you are much more likely to be able to do multiple Tawafs in the time that you would spend putting on the Ihram and going to the Miqat. Sa’ee in and of itself doesn’t have reward, and is only virtuous when done along with Tawaf, but Tawaf itself has much virtue. Therefore, it is better to dedicate your time and effort to increasing your Tawaaf.

 

If however, you have the strength and the time to do multiple Umrahs, do that as well because the reward of Umrah in Ramadan is the same as Hajj as seen from this Hadith.

 

Narrated by Ata:

 

I heard Ibn `Abbas saying, “Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) asked an Ansari woman (Ibn `Abbas named her but `Ata’ forgot her name), ‘What prevented you from performing Hajj with us?’ She replied, ‘We have a camel and the father of so-and-so and his son (i.e. her husband and her son) rode it and left one camel for us to use for irrigation.’ He said (to her), ‘Perform `Umra when Ramadan comes, for `Umra in Ramadan is equal to Hajj (in reward),’ or said something similar.”

(تَنْبِيهٌ): هَلْ إكْثَارُ الطَّوَافِ أَفْضُلُ أَمْ إكْثَارُ الِاعْتِمَارِ وَالْأَظْهَرُ تَفْضِيلُ الطَّوَافِ لِكَوْنِهِ مَقْصُودًا بِالذَّاتِ وَالْمَشْرُوعِيَّةِ فِي جَمِيعِ الْحَالَاتِ، وَلِكَرَاهَةِ بَعْضِ الْعُلَمَاءِ إكْثَارَهَا فِي سَنَتِهِ، وَتَمَامُهُ فِي شَرْحِ اللُّبَابِ وَفِي حَاشِيَةِ الْمَدَنِيِّ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُرْشِدِيُّ فِي شَرْحِ الْكَنْزِ ثُمَّ قَوْلُهُمْ إنَّ الصَّلَاةَ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ الطَّوَافِ لَيْسَ مُرَادُهُمْ أَنَّ صَلَاةَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مَثَلًا أَفْضَلُ مِنْ أَدَاءِ أُسْبُوعٍ؛ لِأَنَّ الْأُسْبُوعَ مُشْتَمِلٌ مَعَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ مَعَ زِيَادَةٍ، وَإِنَّمَا مُرَادُهُمْ بِهِ أَنَّ الزَّمَنَ الَّذِي يُؤَدِّي فِيهِ أُسْبُوعًا مِنْ الطَّوَافِ هَلْ الْأَفْضَلُ فِيهِ أَنْ يَصْرِفَهُ لِلطَّوَافِ أَوْ يَشْغَلَهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ هَكَذَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يُحْمَلَ قَوْلُهُمْ فَتَنَبَّهْ اهـ.
