Question:

So I was making wudu and my nose was bleeding before I had started.

After it stopped and whilst I finished washing my face, I was about to go to my arm but then I noticed and could taste some blood coming out of my nose maybe down to my mouth but I had washed my face thoroughly so I think I was just about to wash my arms but because of this, I went back to washing my face again to make sure that the blood went away and then went back to washing my right arm. was this correct and is my wudu valid because I had gone back to wash a limb I’ve already washed?

I’m having doubts and I did do some research and it says that there shouldn’t be any interruptions between the time of washing each limb but there wasn’t much of a long interruption, and I just wanted to make sure that there was no blood coming down my face and that I had washed my face properly. Please tell me if my wudu is still valid or not? I had prayed asr, Maghrib and Isha with this wudu too.

Answer:

Your concern about the validity of your wudu due to the presence of blood and interruptions is understandable. To address your question:

  1. Presence of Blood:

In the Hanafi madhhab, the presence of blood that flows from its source invalidates wudu. If the blood was from inside the nose and did not flow out, your wudu is not invalidated.1

  1. Interruption Between Washing Limbs:

The continuity in wudu (muwalat) is a point of difference among the madhhabs. In the Hanafi school, continuity is not a strict requirement, meaning that short interruptions do not invalidate wudu if the washing of each limb is completed within a reasonable time.2

You mentioned that after washing your face, you noticed blood and went back to wash your face again before continuing with your arms. This action does not invalidate your wudu. Ensuring that no blood remains is in line with maintaining cleanliness, which is the essence of wudu.

Given that the interruption was brief and was done to ensure cleanliness, your wudu remains valid. The small delay to rewash your face to ensure no blood was present is acceptable.

You prayed Asr, Maghrib, and Isha with this wudu, which is valid if no significant interruption occurred.

Your wudu is valid, and your prayers performed with this wudu are also valid. Short interruptions to ensure cleanliness, particularly when addressing concerns like blood, do not invalidate the wudu in the Hanafi school.

If you continue to have doubts, remember that excessive doubt should not lead to unnecessary hardship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.” (Sunan Nisai 5711)3
