Parkinsons and Umrah
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh
My father has Parkinson’s. His control and movement is not what it used to be. He regularly wets himself without realising he needs to go to the toilet.
Now he wants to go for Umrah. Should he be going for Salah 5 times in the masjid? I, the son and carer know at some point he will have an accident. Can he wear a nappy pant while performing Umrah?

Answer:
There is a great emphasis put on praying in congregation for men. However, one may be excused due to some illness that prevents them from coming. The issue your father is facing is a valid reason for him to pray at home, but he must still pray.
As for performing ‘Umrah, it is necessary for one to be in a state of purity whilst performing Tawaf. Your father may wear a nappy pant whilst performing Umrah but if he has an accident, he must purify himself and then restart the Tawaf. If he has already completed four rounds or more of Tawaf, then he may simply restart from where he left off.
Wudhu and ritual purity isn’t a requirement for the other rituals of Umrah such as Sa’ī and hair cutting, and therefore he may complete them even if he loses his purity.

م: (ومن طاف لعمرته وسعى على غير وضوء وحل) ش: أي حلق أو قصر م: (فما دام بمكة يعيدهما) ش: أي يعيد الطواف والسعي جميعًا م: (ولا شيء عليه) ش: بعد الإعادة م: (أما إعادة الطواف فلتمكن النقصان فيه بسبب الحدث. وأما السعي) ش: أي وأما إعادة السعي بين الصفا والمروة م: (فلأنه) ش: أي فلأن السعي م: (تبع للطواف، وإذا أعادهما لا شيء عليه لارتفاع النقصان وإن رجع إلى أهله قبل أن يعيد فعليه دم لترك الطهارة فيه، ولا يؤمر بالعود لوقوع التحلل بأداء الركن) ش: وهو الطواف والسعي م: (إذ النقصان يسير، وليس عليه في السعي شيء)
