Question:

Assalamu alaykum. I want to do an online marketing job. For that I have to pay my coach who will help me, he tells us that we can pay in instalments via Paypal because it is a high payment. The problem here is when I pay via Paypal they want interest charges, I told him I can not do that because it is haram, he told me he can give me the money of interest charges back and now I want to ask you if that is okay in the islamic way or not? Or should I pay the full amount of money?

Answer:

Wa alaikumus salaam 

From an Islamic perspective, it may seem that you will receive the money back. But you were not supposed to pay for the interest in the first place.

In the Quran and the ahadith, it is clearly prohibited to deal in interest. Therefore one should seek another avenue.

You should seek help and see if someone can assist you in paying the full amount rather than taking the route of interest which is unlawful.

اَلَّذِيۡنَ يَاۡكُلُوۡنَ الرِّبٰوا لَا يَقُوۡمُوۡنَ اِلَّا كَمَا يَقُوۡمُ الَّذِىۡ يَتَخَبَّطُهُ الشَّيۡطٰنُ مِنَ الۡمَسِّ‌ؕ ذٰ لِكَ بِاَنَّهُمۡ قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّمَا الۡبَيۡعُ مِثۡلُ الرِّبٰوا‌ ۘ‌ وَاَحَلَّ اللّٰهُ الۡبَيۡعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبٰوا‌ ؕ فَمَنۡ جَآءَهٗ مَوۡعِظَةٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّهٖ فَانۡتَهٰى فَلَهٗ مَا سَلَفَؕ وَاَمۡرُهٗۤ اِلَى اللّٰهِ‌ؕ وَمَنۡ عَادَ فَاُولٰٓئِكَ اَصۡحٰبُ النَّارِ‌ۚ هُمۡ فِيۡهَا خٰلِدُوۡنَ

يَمۡحَقُ اللّٰهُ الرِّبٰوا وَيُرۡبِى الصَّدَقٰتِ‌ؕ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ اَثِيۡمٍ

Surah baqarah ayah 279

فَاِنۡ لَّمۡ تَفۡعَلُوۡا فَاۡذَنُوۡا بِحَرۡبٍ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ وَرَسُوۡلِهٖ‌ۚ وَاِنۡ تُبۡتُمۡ فَلَـكُمۡ رُءُوۡسُ اَمۡوَالِكُمۡ‌ۚ لَا تَظۡلِمُوۡنَ وَلَا تُظۡلَمُوۡنَ

حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم آكِلَ الرِّبَا وَمُوكِلَهُ وَشَاهِدَهُ وَكَاتِبَهُ
