Recitation Mistakes In Salah

Question:


Mufti sahib. During jummuah salah yesterday, the imam read (whilst reading surah ghaashiyah),
فذكر ما أنت مذكر
instead of,
فذكر إنما أنت مذكر
and the salah was repeated thereafter. Was there a need to repeat this salah, or was the salah considered valid?

 

 

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

 

 

Answer:

 

Wa alaikum as salām wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh,

If as you have mentioned, when reciting Surah Al-Ghashiyah, the Imam read فذكر ما أنت مذكر instead of فذكر إنما أنت مذكر then in this situation, the meaning has been completely changed. The verse originally translates as ‘So, ˹continue to˺ remind ˹all, O Prophet˺, for your duty is only to remind’. 

According to the Imams mistake, the word إن has been dropped from إنما and left ما, where ‘innama’ means ‘only’ with an emphasis and ‘ma’ alone means ‘not’ i.e. negation. So, the meaning changed to ‘So, ˹continue to˺ remind ˹all, O Prophet˺, for your duty is only not to remind’.  

Thus, repeating the salah was appropriate in this situation due to the ‘taghayyur’ being severe and changing the meaning of the words of Allah ﷻ. The salah would have been deemed invalid due to this mistake and therefore needed to be repeated.

  (قَوْلُهُ أَوْ نَقَصَ كَلِمَةً) كَذَا فِي بَعْضِ النُّسَخِ وَلَمْ يُمَثِّلْ لَهُ الشَّارِحُ. قَالَ فِي شَرْحِ الْمُنْيَةِ: وَإِنْ تَرَكَ كَلِمَةً – مِنْ آيَةٍ – فَإِنْ لَمْ تُغَيِّرْ الْمَعْنَى مِثْلَ – وَجَزَاءُ سَيِّئَةٍ – مِثْلُهَا – بِتَرْكِ سَيِّئَةٍ الثَّانِيَةِ لَا تَفْسُدُ وَإِنْ غَيَّرَتْ، مِثْلَ – فَمَا لَهُمْ يُؤْمِنُونَ – بِتَرْكِ لَا، فَإِنَّهُ يُفْسِدُ. عِنْدَ الْعَامَّةِ؛ وَقِيلَ لَا وَالصَّحِيحُ الْأَوَّلُ (قَوْلُهُ أَوْ نَقَصَ حَرْفًا) اعْلَمْ أَنَّ الْحَرْفَ إمَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ مِنْ أُصُولِ الْكَلِمَةِ أَوْ لَا، وَعَلَى كُلٍّ إمَّا أَنْ يُغَيِّرَ الْمَعْنَى أَوْ لَا فَإِنْ غَيَّرَ نَحْوُ – خَلَقْنَا – بِلَا خَاءٍ أَوْ – جَعَلْنَا – بِلَا جِيمٍ تَفْسُدُ عِنْدَ أَبِي حَنِيفَةَ وَمُحَمَّدٍ وَنَحْوُ مَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنْثَى بِحَذْفِ الْوَاوِ قَبْلَ مَا خَلَقَ تَفْسُدُ، قَالُوا: وَعَلَى قَوْلِ أَبِي يُوسُفَ لَا تَفْسُدُ لِأَنَّ الْمَقْرُوءَ مَوْجُودٌ فِي الْقُرْآنِ خَانِيَّةٌ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يُغَيِّرْ كَالْحَذْفِ عَلَى وَجْهِ التَّرْخِيمِ بِشُرُوطِهِ الْجَائِزَةِ فِي الْعَرَبِيَّةِ، نَحْوُ يَا مَالِ – فِي – يَا مَالِكُ – لَا يُفْسِدُ إجْمَاعًا.
