Question:
My mother-in-law wants to perform Umrah, but she cannot travel alone. I am her son-in-law. Can I go to Umrah with my mother-in-law as her Mahram?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Your mother-in-law becomes permanently haram (for marriage) the moment you do the nikah with your wife even before consummation. Thus, mother-in-law becomes a permanent Mahram for the husband.
Allah says in Quran
“Prohibited to you (for marriage) are the mothers of your wives.”[i]
[Sura Nisa 4:23]
Thus, you can travel with your mother-in-law for umrah.
