Question:

Someone has a heart condition and the meds they take make their mouth bleed continuously. Does she fast in Ramadan? As they end up swallowing the blood accidentally. Eg when sleeping.

She’s had couple of operations and has a pacemaker fitted. The medicine she takes are for thinning the blood. Meds can be taken before and after fast. But she bleeds more than saliva which she can spit out daytime but when sleeping she ends up swallowing the blood.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

To swallow blood deliberately is prohibited whether one fasting or not. In the Quran Allah says (Surah Baqarah Ayah 173): “He has only forbidden you: carrion, blood, the flesh of swine and that upon which a name other than Allah has been invoked.”

When it comes to swallow blood by mistake while fasting, then there are few scenarios.

  • If the blood is mixed with saliva and the blood is not dominant such that the color is pale, then the fast will be valid.
  • However when the blood is dominant and can find the taste, the fast will break.

Therefore the fast will break if it is more than the saliva. Thus one will have to keep a qadha and there will be no kaffarah.
