Question:

Someone said I can fast because the insulin injections don’t break the fast (type 1 diabetes), is this true even if i bleed slightly from the injection site, and what about finger prick blood tests, they wouldn’t break the fast as well?

The problem is even it I tried to fast, I have so many questions, like:

1- What if I wake up and need to do ghusl, wouldn’t the water break the fast while gargling mouth and sniffing water in nose?

2- What about brushing teeth, wouldn’t I swallow some toothpaste or water drip slightly down throat?

3- And because of the ocd, I would doubt each day of fasting whether if it’s even valid, so would I need to pay fidya for every day just in case the fasts were not valid?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

It is commendable that you are taking such care regarding performing acts of worship such as fasting which is compulsory in Islam. May Allah swt reward you for such piety and taqwa and increase your Iman and Amal.

With reagrds to your question it is as follows: – Insulin injections which are used for type 1 diabetes does not break the fast as long as it is not taken directly into the stomach in which case it will then break his fast, however one should seek medical advice regarding fasting from a Muslim doctor.

With regards to finger prick blood tests breaking the fast then in that case it does not invalidate the fast.

  1. Performing ghusl when awakening and pouring water into the mouth and nose does not invalidate the fast however care should be taken that it is done in a way that the water does not enter the throat and into the stomach.

2. Brushing the teeth whilst fasting does not break the fast however proper care should be taken that no water or toothpaste enter the throat.

3- Where fidya is concerned there is no reason to give fidya if proper care is taken when carrying out the above actions during fasts.
