Question:
At some point I was angry because i was arguing with a guy who threatened to fight me, and then we went home. He called me to talk again and I had thought that he wanted to fight me again so I brought a knife. However he never attacked me and nothing happened. I felt so bad because of brining the knife with me. It could’ve been easily be solved through a phone call. I knew the guy from before , and we could’ve made peace easily.
Nothing happened after that, we became friends. But Im still feeling regret and guilt as I was the who brought the knife and intended to hurt him if he started a fight. Id like to repent but I don’t know about the ruling on this. Do I have to contact him and tell him or give him blood money?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has clearly taught us that anger is something that a person needs to control and the reason for this is simple, if a person allows their anger to dominate over themselves, then could that person to cause the person on the receiving end of this extreme anger to become subject to either physical, emotional or physiological hurt and anguish. And this is not appropriate for the believer, in fact the Prophet ﷺ has explicitly mentioned that:
“The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the people are safe.”[1] Showing us that a person cannot be a proper, complete Muslim, until they take the physical and emotional welfare of other Muslims into serious consideration.
However, since you have not actually done anything wrong, but you were going to and then stopped yourself, then this is something which is very commendable and doesn’t require for you to give any sort of compensation or do any Tawbah, rather because you decided against your intended evil deed, then by Allah’s will, this will be a means of reward for you.[2]
Lastly I would implore you to realise the negative and destructive outcomes of anger and when you do become angry and if you do become angry again in the future, then take these three practical steps, they will help in suppressing your anger through the permission of Allah;
- Seeking refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed, The Prophet ﷺ said, when he saw a person who was very angry: ‘I know some words that, if he says them, will remove this (anger) from him. They are: “I seek refuge with Allah from the Accursed Shaytan.”[3]
- When you are angry then settle down and become calm, ”[4]
- Being silent and not engaging in any further argumentation or inflammatory discourse, The Prophetﷺ has said: “when one of you becomes angry, then remain silent.”[5]
