Question:
My younger cousin was in madrasah and him and his friend watched a video off the warner dragging some guy across a table for making a kufr joke on the Prophet ﷺ. When he made the joke the brother next to him laughed and my cousin went mad at him so I wanted to know because he laughed at an insult off the Prophet ﷺ the video this is kufr isn’t it?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
If a person laughs at a joke which is offensive to the Noble Prophet (SAW) out of scorn/ disdain for the Prophet (SAW) then this constitutes Kufr. Similarly if one laughs in such a way in which he is looking down upon the Prophet (SAW) or treating our noble beloved Messenger of Allah (SAW) with triviality, then this also constitutes Kufr.
It is difficult to judge what the intention was behind that person’s laugh. Perhaps his laugh was a nervous awkward laugh in reaction to the inappropriate joke, and not out of disrespect for our Prophet (SAW).
Thus we should be precautious in issuing any definitive ruling in this regard, as declaring someone as being a disbeliever is a serious matter.
Rather we should learn a lesson from this video and never mock our Deen or any of our core beliefs. We should definitely steer clear of such videos and we should not consider the mocking of the Noble Prophet (SAW) to be a light matter.
Finally, if the brother did indeed laugh out of disrespect to the Prophet (SAW), please ask him to retake his Shahadah and repent to Allah Ta’ala.
