Question:

After intimacy, if one does tayammum before sleeping instead of Wudhū/Ghusl,  (And then does ghusl upon awakening.) is this fine?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Tayammum is a form of purification in the absence of water, and it is allowed in certain circumstances. The condition is that a person cannot find water and he is a traveller and outside his city or between him and the city is a mile or he is ill, and he fears his illness will become aggravated or the cold can kill him. He can then perform tayammum.

The prophet (saw) said ‘’The earth is the purification of the Muslim, even if it takes ten years as long as he does not find water.’’

Whereas in your situation there is no absence of water it seems, so tayammum is not allowed, if a person wishes to sleep after intercourse, then he should perform wudu, and then once he awakens for fajr he should perform ghusl to purify himself. So one should make the conscious effort to perform wudu before sleeping and then on awakening perform the full ghusl to purify himself from the state of janaba.
