Question:

Salam,
I would appreciate some Sunni Islam guidance on a matter potentially relating to waswasa. The question concerns purity, so please excuse the sensitive and uncomfortable subject matter.
Very often, after I wake up in the morning, mazi (pre-ejaculate) is released in small amounts shortly after waking. It happens so often that I can predict it without checking and be correct. I used to check by placing tissues in that area, and mazi would be released. This is inconvenient because if I want to take a nap, I have to purify the clothes, and I worry about the bed becoming dirty.
My question is: After waking up from sleep during the night or a short nap during the day, do I need to check the private area for mazi even if I don’t feel anything exit? Normally, I would say no, but since it happens so frequently, to the extent that it’s a usual occurrence, this question has been raised.
Thank you for reading and helping me overcome my difficulties and potential waswasa.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Based on the Hanafi Fiqh, mazi (pre-ejaculate) does not require ghusl, but it does necessitate wudu for prayer. The recommended action is to wash the area where mazi is released, but this is not obligatory.

You do not need to excessively check for mazi after sleeping if you do not feel or see any discharge. In fact, constantly checking may be a form of waswasa (a whispering of doubts). The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
“Leave what causes you doubt and turn to what does not cause you doubt. Truth is tranquility, but falsehood is doubt.”
(Mishkat al-Masabih 2773)

This teaches us not to focus on doubts and to act based on certainty. If you do not feel or observe any discharge, then your purity remains intact.

May Allah make it easy for you.

Hadith References:

“Ali commanded Ammar to ask the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) about mazi. He said: ‘Wash your private part and perform wudu.’ The instruction to wash the private part is to ensure that mazi is expelled and stopped, just as it is recommended to sprinkle water on the udder of the sheep to prevent milk from flowing. However, this is not obligatory.”

“There is no ghusl required for mazi or wadi, but wudu is necessary.”

“I remember from the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that he said: ‘Leave what causes you doubt and turn to what does not cause you doubt, for truth is tranquility, and falsehood is doubt.'” (Mishkat al-Masabih 2773)

Only Allah knows best.
