Question:
Any fatwaas or discussions regarding auto-correct and it’s application in talaaq?

Answer:
I have not come across any specific fatwa addressing this issue. Since the matter is unclear, it would fall under the category of kinayah talaq (allusive or indirect divorce). It cannot be equated with a written talaq that is deliberately composed, as in this case, part of the message may have been written intentionally while the rest was altered by the device, resulting in a different word.
Divorce through kinayah (allusive) terms is generally divided into three categories:
- Phrases that serve only as a direct response.
- Phrases that may serve as both a response and a dismissal.
- Phrases that may serve as both a response and an insult.
There are also three main contexts in which such phrases may be used:
- Context of Contentment – where no issue or conflict is present.
- Context of Discussing Divorce – when the wife or someone else asks the husband to divorce her. In this context, the divorce is considered valid for all three phrase categories, except for those that may serve as both a response and a dismissal.
- Context of Anger – when the statement is made in a state of emotional distress.
