Question:
Assalamualaikum! I’m 18 years old boy, living in a joint family. My problem is that I’m very shy to talk to my parents about the shaving of private parts. I know that it is Sunnan & that parts should be shaved within 40 days but I’m very shy & afraid as I’ve never done it before.
So can I delay shaving the private parts for the future so that when I become fully independent or have a private room so then may I shave?
Please help me with this.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Ten are the acts according to fitrah (nature): clipping the moustache, letting the beard grow, using the tooth-stick, cleansing the nose (Al-Istinshaq) with water, cutting the nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the hair under the arm-pits, shaving the pubes, and cleansing one’s private parts (after easing or urinating) with water. [1]
Cutting and shaving off pubic hair is for the sake of cleanliness and health reasons.
Thus the jurists (RA) have said: It is recommended and Mustahab to shave off unwanted hair once a week and the best day is Friday. It is permissible to cut pubic hair once in two weeks and it is Makrooh Tahrimi (which is closer to Haram) to leave it till 40 days. [2]
Narrated Anas bin Malik: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)] fixed the time for us paring the moustache, trimming the fingernails, shaving the pubic hairs, and plucking the underarm hairs – that we do not leave it for more than forty days.” [3]
One may use a machine, razor, blade, powder or cream to clean one’s pubic hair. [4]
There’s nothing to be ashamed about. You may clean yourself in the restroom and you shouldn’t wait till you’re independent.
Only Allah knows best
