Question
There is a sister who is losing hope in Allah because she was betrayed by a man. She feels that Allah has betrayed her and she cannot focus on her salah. When she starts praying all she can think about is that man.
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Firstly, the sister should be advised to not lose hope in Allah and do not despair. Every single person goes through tough and trying times, nevertheless, it is how we react which will show how much faith we have in our Creator and whether we are on khair (goodness) or not.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Indeed the true believer of Allah, All-High, is upon Khair (goodness) having hope in Allah in hard times and praises him in good times”. [1]
The sister is advised to say Alhamdulillah as much as she can as the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has given glad tidings for the one who praises Allah in both good and testing time.
“The first to be called to paradise are those who praise Allah in good and bad times.” [2]
The advice of the prophet Yaqūb to his children shows that losing hope in Allah and having despair is a major sin and a characteristic of the disbelievers which every believer should avoid.
''O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair, not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people." [3]
Secondly, the sister should be informed that Allah has not betrayed her as Allah does not wrong anyone but it is due to our own sins Allah punishes us.
'Indeed, Allah does not wrong the people at all, but it is the people who are wronging themselves.' (10:44)
So if she had committed any sin she should repent straight away as every child of Adam makes mistakes but the best of those who make mistakes are those who repent.
The sister is advised to carry on praying as Allah’s assistance is through patience and prayer.
'O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.' (2:153)
Before starting her prayer she should seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan as this will help her from any distractions in sha Allah and make her more focused in salah by reciting:
أَعُوْذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ
Only Allah knows best
