Question:

Someone said “um” (erm) once in Tarawih as they got stuck.  Any views?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Allah mentions in the Quran: “Take due care of all the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in total devotion.” Surah Baqarah (2:238)

Certainly, one should always try their best to remain focused in Salah. May Allah bless our respected Huffaaz (those who have memorised the Quran), who try their best to remain focussed on what they need to recite in Taraweeh and be totally devoted to Allah with the added pressure of the Muqtadis (those following in prayer). This level of pressure can become overwhelming for many. Getting stuck or confused between verses is common, yet experienced Huffaaz can keep their composure whilst trying to recollect the next verse or await some guidance from those standing behind.

It is Makrooh (disliked) for the Imam to break his composure and utter a sound such as ‘um’ or ‘erm’ or grunt and sob. If they do it once, the Salah will remain valid. Excessive, unnecessary sounds that are not part of Salah, or communicating with someone through words or gestures will invalidate the Salah.

وَيَنْبَغِي أَنْ يُقَالَ إنَّ أَدْنَاهُ حَرْفَانِ أَوْ حَرْفٌ مُفْهِمٌ كَ عِ أَمْرًا، وَكَذَا قِ، فَإِنَّ فَسَادَ الصَّلَاةِ بِهِمَا ظَاهِرٌ

أَقُولُ: وَقَدْ يُقَالُ: إنَّ نَحْوَ عِ، وَقِ أَمْرٌ مُنْتَظِمٌ مِنْ حُرُوفٍ تَقْدِيرًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهَا حُذِفَتْ لِأَسْبَابٍ صِنَاعِيَّةٍ، فَهُوَ دَاخِلٌ فِي تَعْرِيفِ الْكَلَامِ الْمَذْكُورِ بَلْ هُوَ كَلَامٌ نَحْوِيٌّ، وَلَعَلَّ الشَّارِحَ جَزَمَ بِهِ لِذَلِكَ؛ وَلَمْ يُنَبِّهْ عَلَى أَنَّهُ بَحْثٌ لِصَاحِبِ الْبَحْرِ فَتَدَبَّرْ. وَقَدْ ظَهَرَ مِنْ هَذَا أَنَّ الْحَرْفَ الْوَاحِدَ الْمُهْمَلَ لَا يُسَمَّى كَلَامًا، فَلَا يَدْخُلُ فِي قَوْلِ الْهِنْدِيَّةِ وَالزَّيْلَعِيِّ أَنَّ الْكَلَامَ مُفْسِدٌ قَلِيلًا كَانَ أَوْ كَثِيرًا، كَمَا لَا يَخْفَى فَافْهَمْ (قَوْلُهُ وَلَوْ اسْتَعْطَفَ كَلْبًا إلَخْ) أَيْ بِمَا لَيْسَ لَهُ حُرُوفٌ مُهَجَّاةٌ كَمَا صَرَّحَ بِهِ فِي الْفَتَاوَى الْهِنْدِيَّةِ، وَيُشِيرُ إلَيْهِ تَعْلِيلُ الشَّارِحِ بِقَوْلِهِ لِأَنَّهُ صَوْتٌ لَا هِجَاءَ لَهُ. اهـ. ح، لَكِنْ فِي الْجَوْهَرَةِ أَنَّ الْكَلَامَ الْمُفْسِدَ مَا يُعْرَفُ فِي مُتَفَاهَمِ النَّاسِ، سَوَاءٌ حَصَلَتْ بِهِ حُرُوفٌ أَمْ لَا، حَتَّى لَوْ قَالَ مَا يُسَاقُ بِهِ الْحِمَارُ فَسَدَتْ. اهـ. وَذَكَرَ الزَّيْلَعِيُّ فِيهِ خِلَافًا حَيْثُ قَالَ عِنْدَ قَوْلِ الْكَنْزِ وَالتَّنَحْنُحِ بِلَا عُذْرٍ. وَلَوْ نَفَخَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ، فَإِنْ كَانَ مَسْمُوعًا تَبْطُلُ وَإِلَّا فَلَا، وَالْمَسْمُوعُ مَا لَهُ حُرُوفٌ مُهَجَّاةٌ عِنْدَ بَعْضِهِمْ نَحْوَ أُفٍّ وَتَفٍّ، وَغَيْرُ الْمَسْمُوعِ بِخِلَافِهِ

(وعن أبي يوسف أن قوله آه) ش: بفتح الهمزة وسكون الهاء م: (لم يفسد في الحالتين) ش: يعني في البكاء من ذكر الجنة أو النار، والبكاء من وجع أو مصيبة

(لا تفسد) ش: أي الصلاة م: (وإن كانتا) ش: أي الحرفان …

وفي ” المحيط ” إذا قال المصلي: أف مخففا لا تفسد صلاته عند أبي يوسف – رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ – بلا خلاف بين المشايخ
