Question:

Assalaamu Alaikum. I wanted to ask a fiqh related question – with regards to spotting prior to a miscarriage (pregnancy confirmed to be unviable/no heartbeat with ultrasound and lab work) so she knows she’s definitely on the verge of miscarrying – does the woman pray or not and can she fast? I assume she’d renew wudhu each time. She won’t be seen by a doctor until 15th July. Shafi or Hanafi opinion is welcomed.

Answer:

If a woman in this state sees spots, then she must continue to pray and fast (if she is able to). There is a concession with regards to fasting for pregnant women, so if she feels very weak or unable to fast due to her pregnancy, even if she knows it will be a miscarriage, she will be allowed to not fast that day and make it up another day.

If she sees blood, that will break her wudhu. Every time that blood comes out, it will break the wudhu and she must renew it if she wants to pray. If it is coming out continuously, for 1 complete prayer time1, she will make 1 wudhu at the start of every prayer time and pray as much as she wants with that wudhu even if she continues to bleed2.
