Question:
I am a medical student since my SSLC i have an habit of studying at night, when everyone in my home are sleeping but recently my father told me that sleeping late at night is a call for diseases and problems for my family members.
I don’t indulge myself scrolling media, instead i study. And now my father is not allowing. i wanted to know that is it bad/sinful if a student spent its night studying?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer
It would be sinful to disobey the father in something he instructs you to do, as what he has asked is something which does not go against the commands of Allah Ta’ala and is being said with your best interests at heart. Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’an:
“Your Lord has commanded that you should worship none but Him, and that you be kind to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say no word that shows impatience with them, and do not be harsh with them, but speak to them respectfully” [17: 23]
“We enjoined upon man to be dutiful to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning lasted two years. (We, therefore, enjoined upon him): “Give thanks to Me and to your parents. To Me is your ultimate return.
If they strive to make you associate with Me anything about which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them. Yet keep their company in this life according to what is right, and follow the path of those who turn to Me. You will all return to Me in the end, and I will tell you everything that you have done.” [31: 14-15]
It would be better for you to plan your day appropriately so you can maximise on your studying without having to recourse to nigh-time revision. May Allah Ta’ala grant you success.
Only Allah (عز و جل) knows best.
