Suddenly Getting Bad Feelings in My Heart

Question:

While I was praying Ishaa 2 Sunnat, I was thinking positively and suddenly a bad feeling just entered my heart. It was anger against Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) for literally no reason. I wasn’t even thinking of anything negative.

And I don’t know why but I ALLOWED myself to feel that anger and then suddenly stopped. The duration of this was 15-20 seconds. Maybe I was thinking, “Let me feel this stupid feeling for understanding why it is happening or imagining how a person feels when they have such negative feelings.” I don’t know why I did it but it happened and I’m worried that since this was voluntary (to keep feeling that feeling even though it entered my heart involuntarily), it might have caused kufr. Please help me with this.

Please also note that I deal with these types of temptations from the nafs every single day and most of the time I keep them out of my heart at that time, I don’t know why it happened but it really felt like it was voluntary because I ALLOWED myself. I don’t know why and I’m very angry that I did it.

Answer:

We pray all the time and ask Allah SWT to save us from the whispers of the devil and shayaateen.

Our beloved prophet (SAW) has mentioned:

إنَّ اللَّهَ تَجَاوَزَ لِي عَنْ أُمَّتِي مَا وَسْوَسَتْ بِهِ صُدُورُهَا، مَا لَمْ تَعْمَلْ أَوْ تَكَلَّمْ

“Verily Allah has pardoned my ummah for what crosses their minds, so long as they do not do it or speak of it.” [Bukhari Hadeeth no: 2528]

Sometimes we might get wasawis and have bad thoughts temporarily but Allah will forgive us for that Inshaa allaah as long as it doesn’t hinder or change our good actions.

Shaytan is always there to mess things up and cause doubt and negativity within ourselves, we as Muslims must get through it by acknowledging that it’s not what we believe in and what we solely believe in is Allah and his commands. Don’t dwell on the whispers of Shaytaan/negative thoughts too much.

Allah warns us about this in the Qur’an:

وَاَمَّا الَّذِيۡنَ فِىۡ قُلُوۡبِهِمۡ مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتۡهُمۡ رِجۡسًا اِلٰى رِجۡسِهِمۡ وَمَاتُوۡا وَهُمۡ كٰفِرُوۡنَ‏

But as for those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubt, disbelief and hypocrisy), it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief and doubt; and they die while they are disbelievers [Surah Tawbah verse 125].

May Allah SWT keep us grounded in his belief and bless our lives with positivity.

Only Allah knows best.
