Question:
I have bipolar disorder I said talaq 4 times to my wife. I got already fatwa from Darul Ifta. They said talaq is not valid in bipolar disorder. I have one question if bipolar patients in conscious mind still talaq is not valid??
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Answer:
There are multiple types of bipolar disorder. The severity of the disorder and the sanity of the individual at the time of giving Talaq determines whether or not the Talaq is valid.
If your bipolar disorder is such that you were conscious, sane and in control of your faculties at the time of giving Talaq, then in general it will be deemed a valid Talaq [1]. However, I would advise you to discuss your situation in detail with a local qualified Mufti to determine whether or not any extenuating circumstances apply.
Only Allah s.w.t knows best.
