Question:

What is the proof for Salaatul-ishraaq being different from Salatul-Dhuhaa, since most ulamaa say that its the same Salaah, where on the other side some say its two different salah’s?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The difference between Ishraq and Duha prayers is based on various hadith and scholarly interpretations. For Ishraq prayer, there are hadiths such as the one narrated by Abu Huraira that the Prophet Peace be upon him said,

“Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, then prays two rak’ahs, will have a reward like that of Hajj and ‘Umrah.” (Tirmidhi)

This indicates the timing of Ishraq prayer shortly after sunrise. As for Duha prayer, there are hadiths such as the one narrated by Abu Dharr that the Prophet Peace be upon him said,

“In the morning, charity is due on every joint of the body of every one of you. Every utterance of Allah’s glorification is an act of charity, every utterance of praise of Him is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Oneness is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Greatness is an act of charity, and enjoining good is an act of charity. And two rak’ahs which one prays in the forenoon will suffice.” (Muslim)

This indicates the timing of Duha prayer later in the morning. Mawlana Zakaiyah R.A mentioned in his commentary of the Shamail that according to the Fuqahaa (jurists) and Muhadditheen (scholars of Hadith), the time for Salaat al-Dhuhaa is from the morning after the Makrooh time passes till Zawaal. But according to the Sufis it is the time for two separate Salaats, one is Ishraaq and the other is Dhuhaa. and other narrations. (Khasaail Nabawiy pg.292)
