Question:

How far away would one have to move their chest from the Qibla to invalidate salah?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Facing the Qiblah during the salah is a mandatory condition for the validity of Salah. It is paramount importance to ensure one’s chest does not face away from the Qibla during Salah. If one chest does move away from the Qiblah, salah will become invalid immediately. In the UK, the Qiblah is the South-east (towards the Ka’ba). The extent to which leeway is provided regarding the Qiblah is 45 degrees left and right directly from the South-east. The reason for this is, within 45 degrees one would be still considered facing in that general direction of the Ka’ba. Any less will not be feasible for all cases therefore this much leeway is given.
