Question:

Assalamualaykum

I am wondering regarding the ruling of realistic images created by AI (Artificial Intelligence). I know that taswir is forbidden, but does this ruling extend to AI too? If so, why?

Answer:

Wa Alaykum Assalam Wa Rahmatullah,

The ruling that Taswir being forbidden does extend to AI as well. It is no different from capturing a picture with a camera or instructing someone to do it, as the production of the image is a direct result of one’s own actions or instruction. This principle of accountability is understood in many ayaat and ahadeeth, as evident in the hadeeth below:

“He who called (people) to righteousness, there would be reward (assured) for him like the rewards of those who adhered to it, without their rewards being diminished in any respect. And he who called (people) to error, he shall have to carry (the burden) of its sin, like those who committed it, without their sins being diminished in any respect.”

[Sahih Muslim Book 47, Hadith 30]

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ مَنْ دَعَا إِلَى هُدًى كَانَ لَهُ مِنَ الأَجْرِ مِثْلُ أُجُورِ مَنْ تَبِعَهُ لاَ يَنْقُصُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْئًا وَمَنْ دَعَا إِلَى ضَلاَلَةٍ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الإِثْمِ مِثْلُ آثَامِ مَنْ تَبِعَهُ لاَ يَنْقُصُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ آثَامِهِمْ شَيْئًا ‏”

[Sahih Muslim Book 47, Hadith 30]
