Question:

My husband is starting a business by taking a loan on interest from a bank. I know that if the husband is earning haram, the wife can only take what's necessary for survival from his income. Now the problem is that my husband keeps the finances in his hand and buys the stuff himself. Now am I allowed to eat whatever groceries he brings? And furniture and clothes and house and car whatever he buys with his haram money, am I allowed to use them?

Answer:

Hasan Ibn Ali said, "I memorized from the Messenger of Allah 'Abandon that which gives you doubt for that which gives you no doubt.'" [1]

In the commentary of this hadeeth, Imaam Nawawi said, "In Prophet saying -abandon that which gives you doubt for that which gives you no doubt. there is a proof that the person of taqwa ought not to consume property about which there is some doubt, just as it is forbidden him to consume that which is haram." [2]

It was asked to Shaykh Yusuf Ludhyanvi that 'if a husband compels his wife to take Haram money for the household expenditure, and wife takes it. who would be responsible?' He replied The husband would be accountable. Nevertheless, his wife should say to him, I would rather look for a job but won't take your haram earnings. [3]
