Question
I wanted to ask you about the Durood. What’s the correct way to recite? Is it:
جزلان محمد ماهو أهله صلى الله ليه وسلم
جزاء الله وأنا سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ماهو أهله
Also, it is said that if you recite this one time 70,000 angels will write good deeds for you for one year? Could you please validate this from Quran our Hadith?
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
It is very virtuous to send peace and blessings on the final Prophet [peace be upon him] as mentioned in the Qur’an. However, there is no specific way that this has been prescribed.
The way you have described the wording should be as follows: “جزى الله عنا سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ماهو أهله”
The Hadith regarding this is the Mu`jam Al-Awsat of Imam Tabarani #235 and states that whoever says this will have caused fatigue to seventy writers for a thousand mornings. These writers are referring to the angels who record virtuous deeds. So this is a Hadith, although most scholars have not graded it to be very strong.
Nonetheless, sending peace and blessings on the Messenger is virtuous and any wording may be used.
