Question:
I have been suffering from OCD since 2008. It was worse in the beginning but ever since I read that in Islam, certainty is not lifted by doubt, it has gotten better however, I do have episodes of severity in between sometimes.
My question is, if my hands are oily with coconut oil and I touched my leg with it although I’m not sure if the oil transferred or not and if it did, did it transfer in a greater quantity (because the oil also has the consistency to dry down and get absorbed into the skin if it is applied in small quantity). The next afternoon when I go take a shower, while in the shower urine trickles down on my leg and that area where the oily hand had touched my leg.
I washed my leg with water but not with soap, the doubt is actually eating at me because even though I washed my leg with water 2 to 3 times is my leg pure? And am I pure? Or is everything najis? I’ve already prayed and slept in my bed after that. So am I clean or am I napak and is everything najis as well? What should I do if everything is najis? What do I do?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
If you are unsure whether the coconut oil from your hands transferred to your leg, and if it did, whether it was in a significant quantity, this doubt does not impact your state of purity. Coconut oil is not najis (impure); hence, its presence or transfer does not make you impure.
When urine trickled down your leg and you washed the area with water, even if you did not use soap, this act of washing is sufficient to purify the area. Washing with water is generally sufficient to remove najasah, and soap is not a requirement unless the impurity is difficult to remove without it.
Since you washed your leg 2 to 3 times with water, you have fulfilled the requirement for purification. Any remaining doubts should be dismissed in accordance with the principle that certainty is not lifted by doubt. Therefore, your leg is pure.
You are considered tahir (pure), and everything you touched after washing is also considered tahir. Your prayers performed after this washing are valid. You can rest assured that your state of purity is intact, and you do not need to consider yourself or your belongings najis.
