Question:
Since childhood I have been told that if urine is released even if it is just 1-2 drops you should wash your private parts and under garments .But recently I have gone through fatwas which state that if urine or mazi is less than a dirham then you do not have to wash your private parts and undergarments and your salah will be valid .I am not able to digest the fact that how can we perform salah if we are impure even if the impurity is small .Please clarify with reference to hadith.
Answer:
Sayyidna Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah happened to pass by two graves and said: They (their occupants) are being tormented, but they are not tormented for a grievous sin. One of them carried tales and the other did not keep himself safe from being defiled by urine. He then called for a fresh twig and split it into two parts, and planted them on each grave and then said: Perhaps, their punishment way be mitigated as long as these twigs remain fresh.(Sahih Muslim and Sunan Tirmidhee).
The Jurists have mentioned that there are two types of impurities.
- Najaasat Ghaleezah ( heavy impurity)
- Najaasat Khafeefah (lighter impurity)
If Najaasat Ghallezah is thin and flowing (such as urine, blood etc), and falls on the body or clothes it will be excused if the area on which it falls is equal to or less than a fifty pence coin in extent. If the persons performs his salaah without washing it off , his salaah will be valid, but to refrain from washing it and to continue offering his salaah in this way is makrooh. If it is more than a fifty pence coin, then it will not be excused. Salaah will not be valid if it is not washed off.
If Najaasat Khafeefah falls on the body or clothing (such as the the urine of halal animals), if it is less than a quater of the area on which it fell, it will be excused, but if it is equal to or more than a quater it will not be excused. (Baheshti Zewar p44, Aap Ke Masaail p82 v2).
What we understand from the above text is that if Najaasat Ghaleezah was to appear on the body and it was less than a fifty pence coin then for a person to pray salaah, although his salaah will be done but it is highly recommended that if he is aware of it he cleanes that part straight away, yes it will be excused but to continue in this manner is detestable and makrooh. One should clean the impurity.(Aap Ke Masaail pb2 v2).
However with regards to drops of Urine exiting the body while one is offering salaah, then ones salah will break and re-do the wudu and wash the part of his clothing where the impurity has reached. (Fatawa Mahmoodiyyah p49 v2)
