Question

My father bought an interest-based loan for building a house. I ordered some products from Amazon while paying for the product my father comes in the evening so he would come and give me the money in the evening but as the order came in the morning, so I took the money from the loan and made the payment am I sinful for doing so. And is the thing that I brought haram for me to consume. If I am sinful then can I consume it after repenting or do I have to throw the product?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

You have asked us three questions and we will in shā Allah try to answer them one after another.

  1. So, I took the money from the loan and made the payment, am I sinful for doing so?

One should not take possession of another (here: your father) before seeking permission. It is indeed part of the good manners of Islam.

It was narrated from Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “O people, fear Allah and be moderate in seeking a living, for no soul will die until it has received all its provision, even if it is slow in coming. So, fear Allah and be moderate in seeking provision; take that which is permissible and leave that which is forbidden.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, 2227)

It was narrated from Samurah ibn Jundub (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When one of you comes to the cattle, he should seek permission of their master if he is there; if he permits, he should milk (the animals) and drink. If he is not there, he should call three times. If he responds, he should seek his permission; otherwise, he may milk (the animals) and drink, but should not carry (with him).” (Sunan Abu Dawud, 2619)

Therefore, we advise you to inform your father what you did and ask forgiveness to Allah ﷻ for lacking the permission. You may ask your father’s permission in advance in case such situation may occur again, so that you will be in the safe side in shā Allah.

  1. And is the thing that I brought haram for me to consume?

The money you took from your father is lawful for you because Allah ﷻ says: “that no bearer of burden bears the burden of another; and that each person will only have what they endeavored towards, and that (the outcome of) their endeavors will be seen (in their record), then they will be fully rewarded” (Surah An-Najm, v38-41)

Therefore, your purchase will remain lawful in shā Allah.

  1. If I am sinful, then can I consume it after repenting or do I have to throw the product?

Knowing that your purchase is lawful, you may consume the product in shā Allah.

May Allah ﷻ accept our endeavors and safeguard us from unlawful mean. Āmīn.
