Was I Obligated To Perform Hajj In The Previous Years

Question:

 

I have a question. I was wondering if I might have been obligated to perform Hajj in 2020. However, I had just recently converted to Islam at that time. Although I had my ex-husband as a Mahram, there was COVID-19.

 

That counts as an impediment, right?

 

As far as I know, in 2020 and 2021, only people from Saudi Arabia were allowed to perform Hajj. So, I wasn’t obligated during those years, correct?

 

In 2020 and 2021, I think I could have financially covered the expenses for myself and my Mahram.

 

In 2022, I didn’t have a Mahram.

 

In 2023 and 2024, I didn’t have enough money for myself and a Mahram.

 

Was I obligated to perform Hajj in any of these years?

 

Also, how much money should one set aside for Hajj? Would it be considered sinful if I haven’t intentionally saved for it until now?

Answer:

 

From how you have laid out your scenarios I believe that you were not obligated to do Hajj in all of the years mentioned.

 

2020 & 2021; You are correct in your understanding that Hajj during 2020 and 2021 was very much restricted to only residents of KSA. Hence this was a restriction and hindrance hence Hajj was not obligatory on you.

 

2022; if a woman decides to travel for more than 48 miles or 78 km then she has to have a mahram with her, and the same ruling applies for Hajj. As you didn’t have any mahram then Hajj was not an obligation on you.

 

2023 & 2024; it’s a condition for Hajj that you have enough funds to be able to travel there and back, lodging and food and other expenses like visa etc, and if you didn’t have those funds available then Hajj was not obligatory on you.

 

You will not be sinful for not being able to save enough money to be able to do Hajj. I would advice that if its possible then try to save whatever little you can, and keep asking Allah Taala to facilitate and make it easy for you.
