Question:

I and my family including kids have plan for Umera. Long flight from UK to jeddah. Is it permissible, we enter in jeddah without Ehram, stay over there and then take on Ehram in jeddah for umrah. Or suggest other options. It is difficult to put on Ehram in a long flight and then travel straight to Makkah, for children. Please clarify. Thank you

Answer:

Ihram is compulsory for those who intend to enter Makkah for Hajj or Umrah. If the purpose of your travel to Jeddah is for Umrah then you must be in the state of Ihram before entering Jeddah because Jeddah is within the Miqat boundaries.

However, if the purpose of your visit/stay in Jeddah is for other reasons, such as visiting a family member, then you will not be required to wear Ihram before entering Jeddah and may tie it in Jeddah.

If you are concerned that your children will not be able to endure staying in Ihram for so long due to the restrictions of Ihram, then there is no need to worry, as children (those who have not reached maturity) are not obligated to uphold the restrictions as adults are. So something that would usually require compensation or expiation in the case of an adult, does not apply to them, and they are not obligated to fulfill it.

Rather, it is good enough that you encourage and teach them about the rituals of Umrah at a young age so that they can develop an understanding and appreciation for the sacred journey. This will help them gradually adapt to the restrictions of Ihram as they grow older and eventually become responsible adults who can fully participate in the pilgrimage without any difficulty.
