Question
What are the Fardh and Sunnah of Ghusl?
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer
The Fardh (compulsory) actions of ghusl are three:[1]
- To rinse the mouth with water
- To apply water into the nose and blow it out
- To wash the whole body[2]
It should be clarified that if one is due for a Fardh Ghusl, then all three compulsory actions of ghusl must be found. If any of the three are not found then the obligation of Ghusl will remain.
The Sunnah (prophetic) actions of ghusl are nine:[3]
- To begin with Bismillah
- To make the intention of purification
- To wash both hands up to the wrists
- To wash off any impurity before starting ghusl
- To perform wudu (ablution) prior to ghusl
- To pour water over the entire body three times
- To pour water over the head firstly towards the right shoulder and then the left
- To scrub the body
- To wash the body parts consecutively e.g. one part does not dry before washing the next
It is encouraged to adhere to the sunnah actions in order to maximise the benefit of ghusl.
