Question:

What do you do if your son or brother isn’t praying the Salah?

Answer:

Bismillah

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

The following steps could be carried out in encouraging one’s son, brother or even one’s spouse to pray Salah.

  1. Encourage them about the virtues of praying Salah. It is narrated by Saaiduna Abu Hurairah raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) that the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said, “There are angels who take turns in visiting you by night and by day, and they all assemble at the dawn (Fajr) and the afternoon (`Asr) prayers. Those who have spent the night with you ascend to the heaven and their Rabb, Who knows better about them, asks: `In what condition did you leave my slaves?’ They reply: `we left them while they were performing Salat and we went to them while they were performing Salat.” (Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim) In another hadith, Abu Musa Al Ashari raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said, "He who observes Al-Bardain (i.e. Fajr and Asr prayers) will enter Jannah.'' (Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

  2. Remind them of death that one day every one of us will leave this world and the first question we will be asked about in the Hereafter will be about our Salah.

  3. Give them various literatures, CD’s about the importance of Salah.

  4. Finally, make dua to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) to give them the ability (tawfeeq) to pray Salah.

Only Allah Knows Best
