Fatwa ID: 01577
Answered by Mufti Mohammed Tosir Miah
Question:
What is a Fatwa and its implication on Muslims in general
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.
A fatwa is "the legal guidance of a pious and knowledgeable scholar on any matter of Islamic law, based on the Quran and Hadith"
The main difference between a Muslim judge passing a judgement and the fatwa of a competent Mufti is that a Muslim judges ruling is binding whilst a fatwa is not binding, not even on the individual who asked the question as he is free to take advice from another Mufti and act upon his opinion.
