What is Tawheed

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

Tawheed is the act of believing and affirming that Allah is unique and inherently one (Ahad).  Allah (SWA) is one.  None are His partners or equals because a partnership is a deficiency and Allah (SWA) is free from all faults.

Also, a partnership is desirable when one is incapable or not self-sufficient and this is a fault.  He is independent and capable therefore the need for a partner would be superfluous and in vain and whatever is in vain and wasteful is not Allah (SWA).  In short we understand that in trying to prove a partnership the opposite is achieved.  Hence we accept that for Allah (SWA) to have a partnership is impossible.  (Aqaaidul Islam – Moulana Idris Khandhlewi p.16)

Allah (SWA) in the Holy Quran has said: ‘Say, “The Truth is: Allah is one.  Allah is Besought of all, needing none.  He neither begot anyone, nor was begotten.  And equal to Him has never been anyone.’  (Surah Ikhlas v.1 – v.4)

Allah (SWA) comprises all the attributes of perfection and is free from all kinds of imperfections.  The word ‘Ahad’ signifies that Allah (SWA) is beyond composition, plurality and resemblance, which means that He is neither composed of any elements nor does He have any partner nor has He any resemblance to anything.  (Maariful Quran p.915 v.8)
