Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

What is the ruling for undertaking a journey solely to visit the grave/graves of the pious (e.g one's shaikh)?

Is it a commendable act or should it be avoided?

Answer:

In The Name Of Allah, The Most-Merciful, The Most Kind

It is mandoub (desirable) to visit graves, and even if they required travelling to. It is also permitted to visit the graves of the pious ones who have passed before us, as long no acts which are not permitted are done. The Prophet (PBUH) would regularly make visits to the graves of those who were martyred at the Battle of Uhud. [^[1]]

Visiting graves is an opportunity to remember death, which in turn is a reminder of our return to Allah (SWT) and the need to prepare for it.

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“I forbade you to visit graves, but you may now visit them…” [^[2]]

and

“Visit the graves, for that makes you mindful of death.” [^[3]]
